Indiana Pork Farmers Partner with HATCH to Expand Protein Access for Families in Need

Date:

CARMEL, Ind. — Indiana pork producers are celebrating National Pork Month by helping raise awareness about the importance of nutritious protein for families facing food insecurity. Indiana Pork has joined forces with HATCH, a national nonprofit focused on addressing protein insecurity, and the National Pork Board to highlight the role pork producers play in feeding communities and improving access to high-quality protein.

Throughout October, the organizations will share producer stories, nutrition education, and information about the connection between agriculture and hunger-relief programs. The partnership aims to demonstrate how collaboration between pork farmers, industry organizations, and charitable food networks can help make nutritious food more accessible to families across the country.

“Indiana’s pork producers are proud to play a role in feeding people both here at home and across the country,” said Josh Trenary, Executive Director of Indiana Pork. He emphasized that the partnership provides an opportunity to recognize the farmers behind pork production while showcasing how both local farms and larger production systems contribute to feeding American families. Kristen Hicks-Roof, Senior Director of Human Nutrition at the National Pork Board, also highlighted pork as a nutrient-dense, high-quality protein source that supports balanced nutrition throughout different stages of life.

Indiana is the nation’s fifth-largest pork-producing state, with nearly 2,200 pig farmers contributing more than $3 billion annually to the state’s economy and supporting over 14,000 jobs. Founded in 2015, HATCH works with protein producers and hunger-relief organizations to strengthen the supply of nutritious food to communities in need. Through this National Pork Month partnership, the organizations hope to bring greater recognition to the farmers who raise pork and the important role agriculture plays in helping families put nutritious meals on the table.
