The South Dakota Pork Producers Council is continuing its support of youth engagement and community outreach through the return of its Pig Pals program at the 2026 Sioux Empire Fair.
Pig Pals gives individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience showing a pig in a supportive and encouraging environment. Organizers say the event helps build stronger communities while connecting participants with South Dakota pork producers and the livestock industry.
Pig farmers across the state spend countless hours caring for animals and managing their farms, but they also remain committed to supporting their local communities through volunteer efforts and outreach programs like Pig Pals.
The 2026 Pig Pals event is scheduled for Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Sioux Empire Fair Livestock Show Arena. Participants should arrive at 10 a.m., with the show beginning at 11 a.m.
The event provides an opportunity for individuals who may not normally be able to show livestock to interact with pigs, exhibitors, and volunteers while learning more about the pork industry and livestock care.
The South Dakota Pork Producers Council is currently seeking volunteers, sponsors, and participants for the event. Those interested can contact Abbey Riemenschneider by email at abbeyr@sdppc.org or by phone at 605-332-1600.
Programs like Pig Pals continue to showcase the caring side of the pork industry while creating meaningful experiences for families, volunteers, and youth involved in pig farming and livestock exhibition.
