South Dakota 4-H Invites Youth to Explore Leadership, Local Government and Civic Engagement on November 7

Date:

South Dakota youth ages 13 and older have an opportunity to learn how government works, connect with community leaders, and discover how their voices can make a difference.

MITCHELL, SOUTH DAKOTA – Tomorrow’s community leaders are getting an opportunity to see firsthand how local government works. South Dakota 4-H, a program of South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension, is partnering with the SDSU School of Global and American Studies to host a Public Service and Civic Engagement event on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Davison County Fairgrounds in Mitchell, South Dakota.

The event is designed to introduce young people to the responsibilities of local government while encouraging them to become active, informed members of their communities. Through hands-on activities, real-world simulations, and conversations with community leaders, participants will explore how decisions are made at the city and county levels and how those decisions affect the people who live and work in their communities.

Throughout the day, youth will have opportunities to meet local officials, learn how elections are conducted, and better understand the importance of public service. Interactive discussions and team-based activities will focus on developing leadership, critical thinking, and decision-making skills that can benefit participants in school, future careers, and community involvement.

For young people growing up in South Dakota’s agricultural and rural communities, understanding local government and civic engagement can be especially valuable. From decisions affecting rural infrastructure and community development to policies that influence agriculture and local businesses, strong community leadership plays an important role in shaping the future of rural America.

The program is open to all South Dakota youth ages 13 and older, including both 4-H members and nonmembers. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Davison County Fairgrounds, located at 3200 West Haves Avenue in Mitchell. Lunch is included in the $5 registration fee.

Space is limited to 25 participants, and at least 10 registrations are required for the event to take place. Registration closes November 2, 2026.

Families interested in giving their young people an opportunity to develop leadership skills, connect with community leaders, and gain a greater understanding of public service are encouraged to register early.
